Touchbar on iPad

It is not every day that Apple releases a new interaction model. The last big one was the multi-touch feature on iPhone screen, and now, Apple has added a thin striped OLED display on top of keyboard. This display is available on the latest MacBook pros and is called as the TouchBar. If you wish to use the feature, you can emulate the TouchBar on your Mac, and if you wish to use it with touch, you can emulate it on an iPad.

Installing the TouchBar on your Mac

It is relatively easy to install and try a floating on screen TouchBar on your Mac. The steps are explained below.

  • You will need a differently updated build of macOS Sierra 10.12.1, which is Build 16B2657. Download the update file and then install it.
  • Now download the TouchBar Demo app. Make sure that you download the latest version.
  • It will show up as an app file after the download is completed. You will then need to drag it to the Applications folder.
  • Open the app and as a third party developer offers the app – you will need to dodge the security warning of Apple for that. If your Mac device is not allowing to install the app, you will need to go to Security & Privacy in System Preferences and allow app install from any source.
  • After installing the app, it will show up as a menu bar utility.

Installing the TouchBar on your iPad

  • Download the TouchBarClient.ipa file, and then, download and install Cydia Impactor.
  • Open the Impactor and connect your iPad. The name of your iPad will be shown in the list.
  • Drag the file that has been downloaded and type in your Apple ID and sign in details.
  • The app will be ready to launch. Ensure that the Allow iOS TouchBar Clients option in menu bar is selected.

These are the steps to install and use TouchBar in iPad. You should understand that this is simulated, but you will get a real feel about the working of the controllers and the difference in functionalities between apps.
